For decades, I have directed projects that touch hearts and strengthen understanding. I use that experience to trigger discussion, raise funds, and activate the missions of values-based businesses and social profit organizations.I care deeply about the crisis happening in our media landscape. MEDIA THAT MATTERS

I’m grateful to have helped spark a wonderful, supportive creative community that continues today. In 1999, I started a yearly gathering of media makers, Media that Matters, on a small island at the north end of British Columbia’s Salish Sea. The internet had become a recognizable public medium only a few years before. At our first conferences, the World Wide Web was seldom part of the agenda. Media that Matters was a chance for filmmakers to get away from their screens and indulge in deep conversations with one another. In the ensuing years, the promise of social media moved to the core of the conference. We saw it as a way to connect with one another, democratize the planet, and create a more informed and equitable society. We’re still working on that today, when the internet we once saw as a savior has also become a nemesis.Decades later, solutions still depend on our most basic communication technology: conversation, dialogue, and understanding. Over the years, Media that Matters has been blessed with brilliant co-facilitators and attendees: Leif Utne, Stephen Silha, Ruth Ozeki, Tracey Friesen, Sue Biely, Judy Rebick, Gregory Coyes, Mark Achbar, Nettie Wild, Lisa Jackson, Velcrow Ripper, Anna Lappe, Stina Brown, and so many more.Media that Matters continues today, with the support and involvement of Story Money Impact, connecting media makers with changemakers across Canada.
